How the 4D Virtual Lunar Experiment & 1G Ground Control Models Work

360 Frames · 1920×1080 Full HD · 30 fps

To capture the complete time-evolving physics of the LEAF GBC1 hardware (M09024F-MDL-5 Pot Body mated with M09025F-MDL-2 Optical Lid at Y = 33.67 mm), we coupled the 3D Navier–Stokes and Brinkman–Darcy porous-media solver with Richards unsaturated capillary imbibition, sigmoidal 164-seedling developmental ontogeny, and two-phase RNAlater displacement into a continuous 4D Spatiotemporal Simulation Engine (sim/generate_4d_cinematic_videos.py). Each frame synchronizes four complementary diagnostic panels:

1. 3D Isometric Cutaway Digital Twin

Renders the translucent polycarbonate housing, external fluidic manifold tubes on Port 1 (Air Inlet, Z = −21.59 mm), Port 2 (Central Exhaust/Vent, Z = 0.0 mm), and Port 3 (Dipping Nozzle extending to Y = 9.5 mm in Chamber 3), the 3-part porous foam blocks (Y = 7.62–14.62 mm), the 35 µm Nytex root barrier, 164 growing seedlings, and 3D velocity/liquid streamlines.

2. 2D Longitudinal Cross-Section (Z–Y Plane)

Displays the live internal moisture/vapor plume contours (RH%), wake recirculation eddies behind the two internal partition baffles (Z = ±8.5 mm), velocity vector arrows, radial/lateral water propagation across the basal communication channels, and the rising RNAlater harvest flood front.

3. Vertical Moisture & Capillary Profile (Y = 7.62–33.67 mm)

Plots the continuous vertical water saturation profile θ(Y) inside the 7.0 mm foam substrate alongside the relative humidity boundary layer RH(Y) across the 19.05 mm headspace up to the optical lid, directly contrasting Lunar 0.166g capillarity against Earth 1.0g hydrostatic drainage.

4. 5-Day Mission Telemetry Strip (T = −0.5 h to +120.2 h)

Tracks real-time mission progress across all five experimental stages with synchronized time-series curves for foam water fill (%), pump ventilation rate Q (L/min), foliar boundary-layer thickness δbl (mm), and net canopy carbon assimilation Anet (μmol m⁻² s⁻¹).

🌙 Virtual Lunar Surface Experiment (0.166g · 1.62 m/s²)

Moon Flight Model

🎯 What Was Modeled: Full 5-stage 4D virtual experiment on the lunar surface (g = 1.62 m/s², 0.166g) spanning pre-flight water injection (T = −0.5 h), pump activation & flow compensation (Day 1), 5-day co-cultivation of 32 B. rapa + 100 Arabidopsis + 32 B. rapa, nocturnal setback, and end-of-mission RNAlater harvest perfusion (T = +120.2 h).

⚙️ What It Describes: Under 0.166g, the Bond number drops 6× to Bo = 2.0 × 10⁻⁵ and Jurin capillary rise reaches hc = 4,380 mm (≫ 7.0 mm foam height), while natural convective Grashof buoyancy drops by 83.4%, thickening uncompensated foliar boundary layers by +36.3%.

📊 What It Shows: (1) Uniform 99.1% capillary saturation all the way up to the 35 µm Nytex seedbed; (2) a thick stagnant moisture plume (δbl = 5.1 mm) at uncompensated 0.50 L/min that is actively swept down to 3.4 mm when pump flow steps to 0.85 L/min (restoring 98% of Earth photosynthesis, Anet = 13.41 μmol m⁻² s⁻¹); and (3) a piston-like capillary RNAlater front saturating roots in 31.7 s and flooding the full chamber in 5.82 min.

🌍 Virtual 1.0g Earth Ground Control (1.00g · 9.81 m/s²)

Earth 1g Control

🎯 What Was Modeled: Synchronous 5-stage 4D ground control simulation under terrestrial gravity (g = 9.81 m/s², 1.00g) at the nominal 0.50 L/min ventilation setpoint with identical hardware geometry, seed density (164 seeds), and 22.0 °C chamber temperature.

⚙️ What It Describes: Under 1.0g, hydrostatic head pulls pore water downward against matric suction (Bo = 1.2 × 10⁻⁴), while warm, humid transpired air experiences strong upward thermal and solutal buoyancy (βH₂O = +0.379, GrL = 6× Lunar).

📊 What It Shows: (1) A hydrostatic vertical moisture gradient inside the 7.0 mm foam (99.2% saturation at the basal floor vs. 91.2% at the top Nytex barrier); (2) buoyant convective vapor plumes rising off the leaves that naturally thin the boundary layer to 3.5 mm even at 0.50 L/min; and (3) a gravity-leveled horizontal RNAlater meniscus rising uniformly across all three compartments while venting air out Port 2.

Bottom-up injection at Y = 9.5 mm prevents foliar splash damage and vents 100% of displaced headspace air out Port 2 safely below the 5.0 kPa seal limit.

Stage-by-Stage 4D Experimental Breakdown & Individual Video Clips

Each critical physical phase of the 5-day LEAF GBC1 experiment is isolated below with its dedicated 1080p clip and 3-Pillar analysis (What Was Done, What It Describes, and What It Shows):

Stage I: Water Injection & Foam Activation

T = −0.5 to 0.0 h

What was done: Simulated the injection of 7.39 mL of activation water through the Port 3 dipping nozzle (Z = +21.59 mm, tip at Y = 9.5 mm inside Chamber 3 foam).

What it describes: Radial Darcy–Richards imbibition across the basal communication channels (Y = 0–7.62 mm) into Chambers 2 and 1, arrested at the top seedbed by the 35 µm Nytex mesh (8.04 kPa Laplace bubble point).

What it shows: Lunar 0.166g achieves uniform 99.1% top-to-bottom foam saturation, whereas Earth 1.0g exhibits an 8% vertical hydrostatic drainage gradient (91.2% at the Nytex surface).

⬇ Download Stage I MP4

Stage II: Tube Airflow, Baffles & Moisture

T = 0 to 24 h

What was done: Modeled air pump activation through the external Port 1 & Port 2 manifold tubes, wake recirculation behind the Z = ±8.5 mm partition baffles, and vapor transport from the wet Nytex screen.

What it describes: Coupling between forced ventilation (Re), baffle shear eddies, and gravity-dependent Grashof buoyancy (GrL) governing the thickness of the humid boundary layer.

What it shows: At 0.50 L/min in 0.166g, moisture pools in a thick 5.1 mm boundary layer; stepping pump flow to 0.85 L/min intensifies baffle eddies and thins the boundary layer to 3.4 mm.

⬇ Download Stage II MP4

Stage III: 5-Day Germination & Growth

T = 24 to 120 h

What was done: Coupled sigmoidal 5-day plant morphometrics (164 seeds germinating at 18–24 h) with Brinkman canopy drag (D = 8.28 s⁻¹ in Ch 1 & 3 vs. 4.72 s⁻¹ in Ch 2) and FvCB photosynthesis.

What it describes: Development of the asymmetric canopy architecture—32 tall Brassica rapa (11.26 mm) flanking 100 prostrate Arabidopsis thaliana rosettes (4.75 mm)—and the resulting 14.2 mm central plenum.

What it shows: Formation of the “Dip-and-Converge” airstream that flushes the central Arabidopsis lawn and equalizes Mean Age of Air (6.05–6.10 s) while sustaining Anet = 13.41 μmol m⁻² s⁻¹.

⬇ Download Stage III MP4

Stage IV: RNAlater Harvest Injection

T = 120.0 to 120.2 h

What was done: Simulated end-of-mission injection of viscous RNAlater fixative (ρ = 1,080 kg/m³, μ = 3.2 mPa·s) at 10.0 mL/min through the Port 3 dipping nozzle (Y = 9.5 mm).

What it describes: Two-phase Darcy displacement through the root-compacted foam (φ = 0.50 → 0.34) followed by bottom-up headspace flooding and displaced gas venting through central Port 2.

What it shows: Complete root-zone saturation in 31.7 s and full 64.7 mL chamber immersion in 5.82 min with zero trapped gas pockets and ΔP ≤ 4.04 kPa (< 5.0 kPa seal limit).

  • Mated CAD Envelope (Pot + Lid) Pot (M09024F-MDL-5): 47.63 × 33.67 × 67.95 mm. Lid (M09025F-MDL-2) rotated 90° and seated at Y = 33.67 mm (Y span 32.40–38.11 mm).
  • 3-Part Partitioned Porous Substrate (Y = 7.62–14.62 mm) Split into 3 discrete blocks seated on internal chamber retainer ledges (thickness ΔY = 7.00 mm, ε = 0.50, permeability K = 10−10 m²). Total bulk volume = 10.55 cm³ (5.28 mL void volume).
  • Lower Aeration & Drainage Base (Y = 0.0–7.62 mm) Molded basal troughs (8.74 cm³) below the substrate ledges provide root zone oxygenation and capillary moisture buffering.
  • Open Central Plenum (ΔY = 14.2 mm in Chamber 2) Because Chamber 2 houses prostrate Arabidopsis rosettes (height h = 4.9 mm) between tall B. rapa canopies (height h = 11.4 mm), air skims across Chamber 1, dips into Chamber 2's open plenum, converges with Chamber 3, and exits cleanly out Port 2.
  • Port 3 Sub-Surface Dipping Nozzle (Y = 9.5 mm) Delivers water and harvest-phase RNAlater directly into the core of Substrate Block 3, driving bottom-up capillary imbibition without foliar splashing.

Model Lunar LEAF Experimental Multi-Physics Summary

  • 1. Initial Water Activation & Nytex Mesh Root Exclusion Barrier At mission commencement (Hour 0), 7.39 mL of deionized water is injected through Port 3 into the lower foam cassette, achieving 100% liquid saturation across all 3 partitioned foam blocks (φ = 0.70, total bulk volume 10.55 cm³). Wrapping the foam is a medical-grade 35 μm monofilament nylon (Nytex) screen with an 8.04 kPa Laplace bubble point. This ensures complete capillary moisture continuity to the seedbed while providing a 100% root exclusion margin against primary radicles (90–320 μm diameter), preventing root penetration and pore clogging in the foam matrix.
  • 2. Aerodynamic Regimes: Forced Positive Pressure (Push) vs. Safe Bio-Containment Suction (Pull) In Push Mode, the external pump drives air into Port 1, creating positive chamber gauge pressure (+1.2 to +14.5 Pa), localized jet impingement, and recirculating corner eddies (γ ≈ 0.85–0.88). In Pull Mode, the pump pulls air out through Port 2, producing negative gauge pressure (−1.0 to −11.8 Pa). This suction mode provides intrinsic bio-containment for the crew cabin, eliminates air leakage risk, and achieves highly symmetric streamline convergence (γ > 0.95) across all three growth compartments.
  • 3. 5-Day Developmental Ontogeny & Canopy Drag Scaling Seeds germinate within 18–24 hours under capillary hydration. Cotyledons emerge by Day 2 (Hour 48), marking the autotrophic transition where net carbon assimilation crosses from negative (respiration: −0.85 μmol/m²s) to positive photosynthetic uptake (+0.12 → +13.41 μmol/m²s in B. rapa). Over 120 hours, 164 seedlings transpire a cumulative 4.19 mL of water. At Day 5, B. rapa reaches 11.26 mm in height, while Arabidopsis forms a 4.75 mm rosette lawn, leaving a 14.2 mm clear open plenum in Chamber 2 for unimpeded flow convergence into Port 2.
  • 4. Environmental Multi-Physics Sweeps (Gravity 0–1g & Temperature 18–30 °C) Coupled Navier–Stokes and energy simulations across microgravity (0.0g), Lunar (0.166g), Martian (0.38g), and Earth (1.0g) confirm that forced convection dominates (Richardson number Ri ≤ 0.04) at nominal ventilation rates (Q = 0.50–0.85 L/min). Temperature sweeps prove that the optical lid condensation safety margin remains positive (ΔTmargin = +0.83 °C to +2.45 °C), guaranteeing clear, fog-free time-lapse imaging across all operational envelopes.
